Client Success Stories

A client identified two "problem people" in a team who were impacting productivity and morale. One had been a star producer. Our initial assessment revealed that four people were involved in the problem: The leader, who was conflict-adverse; an instigator, who was triggering conflict between the two problem people; the star performer with workaholic expectations; and dad, who had child care responsibilities. Other members of the team had begun taking sides, resulting in a team out of balance and unable to accomplish goals.

The solution:

  1. individual coaching for the leader to improve conflict management skills,
  2. training in conflict management for the entire team, including open facilitated discussions about the issues occurring in the workplace,
  3. facilitated difficult discussions/mediation with the three people actually directly involved in conflict, and
  4. prescriptive team meeting activities related to continuing the discussions.

The result:

Determined through structured and anecdotal follow-up over a five-year period, a team that functions effectively with no further problems, a successful leader who has demonstrated an improved capacity to manage team members, and staff who remained with the company as productive and successful contributors.
